Sustainability assessment of Micro hydro Power MHP sites in Chitral, Gilgit and Skardu for PURE Projects implementation
Project Name:
Sustainability assessment of Micro hydro Power MHP sites in Chitral, Gilgit and Skardu for PURE Projects implementation
Client:
PURE
UNDP, United Nations Development Program
Role:
Short Term Consultant
Project Description:
PURE Project responds to Pakistan’s rural development priorities by promoting income- generating agricultural and agro-processing practices, rational use of natural resources and poverty alleviation. The project also aims at increasing the adoption of renewable energy technologies (RETs) by promoting productive use of green energy in Chitral (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) and Gilgit Baltistan (GB).
In order to get information for the sustainability study, a mix of data collection methodologies were applied. The methodologies circled around both primary and secondary data. The methodology used for data collection was a combination of qualitative research methods i.e. Focused Group Discussions (FGD’s), key respondent interviews, observations and review of secondary data and reports from various organizations. In this connection, objectives were shared and feedback was gathered from AKRSP and LSO’s.
Details of participants of the Focused Group Discussions (FGD):
VO Members: They are the ultimate users of power generated through MHP’s and responsible for operation & maintenance of these plants. These include people from all trades of life i.e. farmers, shop keepers and village elders etc.
WO (Women Organization): Due to social restrictions, separate group discussions were conducted with the help of female facilitators. As women are also the main users of the MHP’s and keeping in view the importance of the greater aspect, special sessions were conducted to take their views, needs and aspirations.
Observation method was also used to verify and document the information provided by the locals during the meetings.
Based on the findings and interfaces drawn, a report was compiled. The report was then been shared with relevant quarters to receive feedback
Solar Biomass Hybrid Tobacco Drying/Tobacco Curing
Project Name:
Solar Biomass Hybrid Tobacco Drying/Tobacco Curing
Client:
Pakistan Tobacco Company
Role:
Short Term Consultant
Project Description:
Design and development of solar tobacco curing integrated with Biocoal briquettes. The concept was switching the tobacco drying from conventional wood fuel to coal briquettes, but it was not successful therefore BAT administration thought about integrating the coal briquettes with solar dryer collector to reduce the fuel cost. The basic idea was proper coloring and de-coloring of the leafs and curing should be managed in multiple steps so that taste shouldn’t be varied much. A highly selective paint with copper absorber was proposed with air channels on the roof top. This drastically reduced the fuel load on the Klin.
Supply of High efficient Solar Dryer for Apricot
Project Name:
Supply of High efficient Solar Dryer for Apricot
Client:
UNDP PURE Project
Role:
Short Term Consultant
Project Description:
Design and development of solar tobacco curing integrated with coal briquettes. The project was installed in Skardu where apricot production is too high that major production is being wasted.
The entrepreneur activity was carried out under PURE through UNDP, and with community participation. Again these systems were needed to be hybridized with hydropower electricity. So that sun should be used in the day time and in night hydro electricity ensures the proper heating through the heating filament.
